ONLY AUTOCRATS FEAR FREEDOM AND DEMOCRACY ON THEIR BORDERS. When an autocrat acts aggressively and violently against a neighboring nation, for no other reason than such a fear, that autocrat becomes an agent of evil.
In the Russian war against Ukraine, now underway, the Russian autocrat is raining down suffering, destruction and death on the Ukrainian people, but also on the men and women in the Russian army invading Ukraine. What’s more, the economic responses from the democratic West, while not as blatantly violent as the Russian military aggression, nonetheless visit suffering upon the Russian people — and upon many in the West as well.
Indeed, the Powers of Darkness are loose in the land. The autocrat has been possessed by the Shadow, casting the world into shade. The evil constellated is archetypal, but it’s the people who suffer the most.
This is the 21st century face of the Principalities and Powers that Paul (Eph. 6:12) — and many others — recognized at work in the Roman Imperium.
